Katandra West believes that the success of each child is the result of a partnership between students, staff, parents and the local community. There are a number of ways you can become involved in your child’s learning experience at Katandra West Primary School:
School Council: Joining School Council is an ideal way for you to learn more about how a school operates and to contribute in a very meaningful way. Our School Council consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, a number of Parent Members, a Parents & Friends Representative and at least two Department employees. School Council meetings are convened at least eight times a year, usually twice a Term in the evenings to ensure maximum attendance of members. School Council elections are held at the beginning of every school year. We encourage all parents in our school community to have a voice through our School Council Members. School Council is involved in the strategic, financial, policy development and promotional aspects of the school. School Council Members are your representatives and willingly support you.
Parents and Friends: We have a very active group of parents and friends that work hard raising much needed additional funds for our school. They meet regularly to plan fundraising events and have a say in how these funds are spent. Joining the P&F is a great way for you to meet other community-minded parents and to strengthen our school and community together.
Classroom Volunteers: Parents are encouraged to play an active role in their child’s learning. Parents are welcome to volunteer to work in a variety of roles available in our classrooms. Our Child Safe Code of Conduct and a current Working with Children’s Check card should be presented to the office prior to any classroom volunteering taking place. Working with Children Checks are free and relatively easy to complete. If you would like any help with this, please contact the school for assistance.
Playgroup: The Katandra West Playgroup meets fortnightly in the Art Room at Katandra West primary School. Playgroup sessions are facilitated by community volunteers to encourage pre-primary school aged children to socialise and play at school before attending in subsequent years. It is a great opportunity for new parents to meet other people in our school community.
We are also proud of the strong connections we have with local community groups such as the Katandra West and District Men’s Shed, Katandra West Children’s Centre, Katandra West Football Netball Club, Katandra West Cricket Club and Katandra West Tennis Club.
The Men’s Shed is an amazing resource for our school, they maintain our grounds by mowing and spraying weeds. They have also built bat tennis stands which are well utilised by our active students.
We include children attending kindergarten at the Katandra West Children’s Centre in incursions we may have from visiting performers. Some children also use our school bus to get to Kinder, helping them transition to school the following year.
Our students have the opportunity to participate in Auskick and Net-Set-Go through the local Football/Netball club. These programs are facilitated by parents at the school and culminates in netball and football games played between parents and children at the end of the season.
Our school oval has a cricket pitch which is used by the junior cricket club throughout the cricket season. A feature of the junior cricket is the sausage sizzle, cooked on the school’s BBQ, for all community members who attend the match.
The Katandra West Tennis Club has grown in recent years with a number of teams entered in the Shepparton Junior Tennis Association competition each year. These teams include Katandra West Primary School students and they report results back at our weekly assembly.
